I grew up in an airline family, where my father flew for American Airlines for decades and my mother was a stewardess, a term she insisted upon. Aviation was the family trade long before it was ever my decision, so when I graduated from Parks College of Saint Louis University and went straight into the cockpit, it felt like the only logical next step.
I flew for USAirways from 1988 to 2005, logging time on the B-727, DC-9, B-737, and Airbus A-320. When the airline's bankruptcy wiped out the pensions many of my colleagues had been counting on, I watched people who had spent their careers doing everything right suddenly face a retirement they hadn't planned for. That experience, combined with what I had already watched happen to my own father's retirement, made the career change an easy decision, because the purpose was already there.
I spent more than a decade at Edelman Financial Engines, one of the country's top independent advisory firms and ranked number one by both Barron's and Consumer Reports during my time there. That's where I built the foundation of how I approach planning: rigorously, systematically, and with a long view. Goals are easy to name. What actually matters is building the systems to reach them.
I founded Freedom Capital Management in 2021 and run it as a sole practitioner based in Richmond, Virginia, working with clients nationwide. Every client gets my full attention and the same planning framework I apply to my own financial situation. I am a fiduciary, which means I am legally required to put your interests ahead of my own, and in practice, that plays out simply. The investments I recommend to clients are the same ones I own myself, and the planning software I use for you is the software I use for me. If I wouldn't buy it, I won't sell it.
